Head of Engineering

Customer accounts have a sort code and individual account number and IBAN, denominated in Tally, and accessed via a smartphone app and with a Tally Debit Mastercard to use at home and abroad.

Role: Head of Engineering

We are looking for an experienced high-calibre individual to join our leadership team. The ideal candidate will have significant hands-on leadership roles in software development, particularly within financial services. You will be responsible for overseeing all technical aspects and technological resources of the organisation. This role requires a deep expertise in Node.js, Amazon Web Services (AWS), MongoDB, React, and React Native. Strong emphasis is placed on hands-on development, performance architecture, security certifications, and agile methodologies. You will lead the team by example by contributing to the coding repository using best of breed coding practices.

  • Proven work experience leading, managing, and mentoring a team of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive the technical vision, strategy, and execution of the engineering team.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to align engineering objectives with company goals.
  • Leveraged experience in the financial services industry to guide the development of secure, compliant, and innovative financial products.


In Technical Oversight:

  • Extensive experience overseeing the development, deployment, and maintenance of scalable software solutions.
  • Expertise in ensuring the delivery of high-quality code through best practices in software development, including code reviews, testing, and continuous integration.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of emerging technologies and industry trends to ensure the company’s technological infrastructure remains modern and competitive.
  • Skilled in designing and implementing robust, secure, and scalable architecture.
  • Extensive engagement in hands-on development, particularly in complex or critical projects, to set technical standards and provide leadership by example.
  • Ensured robust, secure, and scalable architecture is in place.
  • Skilled in designing and implementing performance architecture to ensure high availability and scalability of applications.
  • Expertise in conducting performance tuning and optimization of systems and applications.
  • Implementation of best practices in security and data protection.
  • Ensured compliance with industry regulations and standards.
  • Leveraged security certifications to enhance the security posture of the organisation.


In Agile Methodologies:

  • Proven ability to define project scope, goals, and deliverables that support business goals in collaboration with senior management and stakeholders.
  • Strong skills in developing and managing project plans, timelines, and budgets
  • Led teams in adopting and implementing agile methodologies such as Scrum and XP.
  • Utilised project management tools like Jira, Asana, and Monday.com to track progress and ensure timely delivery of projects.
  • Fostered a culture of continuous improvement through regular retrospectives and feedback loops.
  • Proficiency in querying and managing 3rd party relationships with organisations like TransactPay, Marqeta, TruNarrative, MasterCard, etc. and ensuring SLAs are appropriately set and achieved
  • Analytical and fault-finding (in a good way!) brain that can sniff out issues in internal process(es) and implement solutions
  • Experience in understanding the big picture and creating strategies suiting the business needs
  • Proven ability to motivate, recruit, train and supervise staff based on the needs of the Organisation


Bonus if you also have:

  • Knowledge of organisational effectiveness and operations management
  • AWS Solution Architect certification
  • Experience in budgeting and forecasting
  • Working knowledge of containers and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with building observability into services to track usage and health (New Relic)
  • Working knowledge of Kafka, Flink, IoT streaming technologies
